David Weiner: Speaker at Claris Engage 2024

After nearly five years, Claris Engage (formerly FileMaker DevCon) will be an in-person event. Needless to say, people are excited! The Claris community will gather on February 6-8th at the all-new Apple Campus in Austin, Texas.

The 25th in-person edition of the event promises a lot, to say the least. Attendees will choose from over 60 different sessions from over 40 different speakers. Topics include Claris Connect, FileMaker Pro, project management, web projects, integration, JavaScript, scripting, AI, best practices, and more.

Proud Employer

Direct Impact Solutions is proud to say that one of the speakers will be its very own David Weiner. David is a full-time developer and project manager based in Portland, Oregon. For the last ten years, David has worked full-time as a Claris FileMaker developer. His first exposure to the FileMaker platform was in 1998, while working as a coordinator on the animated feature film South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut, where he used FileMaker to track reams of production data. He has been building custom FileMaker business apps ever since. Since working for DIS, David has worked closely with the Oregon Health Authority on the state’s disease surveillance system, ORPHEUS, which was crucial for tracking state Covid cases during the pandemic.

Being part of a team that impacted the way epidemiologists kept tabs on the Covid outbreak was very satisfying.”

To better understand what it means to David to present at Claris Engage, we’ve asked him a few questions. His answers might surprise you!

What made you want to be a speaker at Claris Engage 2024?

“I’ve never spoken at Claris Engage (or DevCon as it used to be called), but I’ve wanted to. I applied a few years ago but wasn’t accepted. I’m pretty proud of the work I did for OHA during Covid, and thought it was worth sharing!”

What does it mean to you to share your work with the community?

‘’It gives me a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that the folks at Claris recognized my work as worthy of sharing with the wider community.’’

What are you hoping to get out of this experience?

“I guess my hope is that I’ll gain a measure of respect and recognition as a skilled developer from my peers and colleagues.”

What are you looking forward to the most about the event?

‘’Reacquainting myself with a lot of the developers I met at past conferences and feeling like part of the community again. It’s been a while since I had that.’’

What are you most proud of in the solution you are presenting at Claris Engage?

‘’I’m most proud of how important the work was; It was built to support the people that were working on the front lines of the public health effort to combat Covid. I like to think that, at least indirectly, the solution saved lives.’’

What was the biggest challenge in this project, and how did you overcome it?

‘’The biggest challenge was making sure that the data being entered into web forms was kept private – this was Protected Health Information and needed to be handled with the utmost privacy and security. We ended up only storing the data in an encrypted format, and only on the web server for 15 minutes at a time. The encrypted data was pulled into the internal network every 15 minutes, and then purged for safety.’’

Conclusion

Attendees and speakers alike are eagerly anticipating the first in-person Claris Engage event in several years; it is a great opportunity to reconnect with the community and talk about the Claris platform. If you haven’t registered yet, you still can by visiting the Claris website.
